Um cão que apoia em fiscalizações alfandegárias no aeroporto de Chicago-O’Hare acionou um alerta do Centro de Controle e Prevenção de Doenças dos EUA (CDC) após a apreensão de carne em decomposição na bagagem de um voo proveniente de Amsterdã, no dia 30 de maio.
A bagagem do viajante continha carne crua de caça africana em decomposição, infestada de larvas, após 30 horas de trânsito entre aeroportos. O cão ficou tão agitado que começou a rasgar o plástico que envolvia a bagagem assim que esta apareceu.

Um vídeo do ocorrido revela várias bolsas com zíper contendo a carne. Os agentes são vistos inspecionando duas malas junto à esteira de bagagens, visivelmente chocados. De acordo com a mulher que gravou o vídeo, o “cheiro era indescritível”. Oficiais da alfândega identificaram itens como “pele de boi” e uma “cabeça de boi embalada”.
O CDC foi acionado, pois a carne mal processada de animais selvagens, como antílopes ou primatas, pode carregar doenças graves, incluindo o Ebola, que pode se espalhar pelo manuseio ou consumo de animais infectados. Os sintomas do Ebola podem aparecer entre dois e 21 dias após a exposição e podem causar problemas graves de saúde, como sangramentos, diarreia e vômitos. A taxa de mortalidade em surtos anteriores variou de 25% a 90%.
Vídeos da apreensão foram vistos mais de 15 milhões de vezes. A entrada de carne de caça nos Estados Unidos pode resultar em multa de até US$ 250 mil.

The hound had alerted to the baggage’s before it had even hit the conveyor belt- it went absolutely nuts, when the luggage hit the belt the hound started ripping at the plastic wrap. An agent put both bags on the ground and began opening both- what she found was RAW BUSHMEAT FROM AFRICA. The passenger had been on a KLM flight that originated in Africa with a layover in Amsterdam. Which is over 30 hours of that raw meat sitting there- By the time it had arrived it was RANCID – the smell is unlike anything you’ll have ever smelled in your life – there were maggots crawling around in the bag – my question is this- how did this make it past security the first time , much less the second time when the smell should have alerted someone in Amsterdam.
